The environment is an issue that has risen up the political agenda in the past few years, both in terms of climate change and the more traditional issues of conservation and protection of natural habitats.

This rise in importance has meant that Parliamentarians have been asked to legislate or scrutinise on areas where they do not necessarily possess the specialist knowledge to undertake the task.
